Steve's Blog

I try to use this blog to record something about my life everyday.

My Photo
Name: Steve Brown
Location: Little Rock, Arkansas, United States

On December 31, 2007 I left my job with Sprint/Embarq where I worked as a Software Engineer for 15 years at the Sprint Campus in Kansas City. In January 2008 Mary and I started Steve Brown Ministries and started traveling the United States broadcasting "Live Video" of Revivals, Bible Conferences, Mission Conferences, and other Special Services. Mary and I enjoy serving the Lord Jesus Christ and traveling to churches as we minister through SteveBrownMinistries.com. We are very pleased that our ministry is endorsed and we are sent out of our home church at Heritage Baptist Temple in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Broke My Record With 46.1 Miles Per Gallon

My little Honda Fit broke all my previous records today. I filled up at Roe Ave. and I435 in Kansas City and did not fill up again until the Big Red on Col. Glenn Road in Little Rock. It took me 9.2 gallons of gas to drive from Kansas City to Little Rock. That equates to 46.1 miles per gallon. WOW! I am impressed. In order to accomplish this I did not drive over 60 MPH for the entire trip. I averaged about 58 MPH. I must have had 10,000 vehicles pass me during the trip.

Packing For Arkansas

It's that time again already to get ready to go to Arkansas tomorrow. Since I am expecting all the family to come up to Kansas City next week for Robby's wedding I had to do some cleaning up of my apartment. I did a little picking up, straighening up and vaccuming so my apartment would be a little more presentable to the family. I also packed up the few things I need to take with me to Arkansas tomorrow.

Three Miles In The Rain

It was misting rain today at lunch so we went looking for a way to walk without getting out in the rain. We walked the entire length of the Sprint Campus on covered walk ways two times. My pedometer tonight said we walked over 10,000 steps which is over 5 miles. Most of that was on our noon walk.

The problem with this walk is that the smokers also congregate on these same walk-ways and smoke right beside the "Smoking Prohibited In This Area" signs.

Honda Fit Gas Mileage Update

I added a new link to my Blog this morning. Down on the left side under "Other Blogs" I added a link to "2007 Honda Fit Gas Mileage". My hope is that it will be easier to update now. As always, the gas mileage depends on the way you drive. I can get 40 plus miles per gallon but it takes me an extra hour to get from Little Rock to Kansas City. HondaFitGasUsage.htm

Back To Kansas City Again

It sure seems like I am going and coming a lot. I barely get to Little Rock and it is time to go back to Kansas City and I barely get to Kansas City and it is time to go back to Little Rock. It's enough to make one tired just going and coming. Surely there is an end to this madness someday.

New Bids For Sound System At Church

The pastor gave me three bids to consider for the sound system in our new building. Two of the bids are turn-key jobs and the other bid is with us doing all the work. It looks like we get much better equipment for the money if we do the work ourselves. The cost is going to be around $50-60 thousand dollars for sound equipment.

Mowing Halted By Rain

I put new blades on my John Deere Mower Deck this morning and started mowing. After the first round I determined that there was a weird sound coming out of the mower deck. I took it off and opened up the housing only to find a small rock was rattling around. I started mowing again after reasmembly and did not mow long before it started raining. It rained a long time and things were pretty wet so I gave up and went grocery shopping.

After the rain stopped and the sun began to shine the power went off for a couple hours.

Murry Hopkins Funeral

Since I got to come home to Arkansas yesterday evening we decided to attend Murry Hopkins funeral this morning. We both grew up with Murry and the last time I saw him was at Fort Polk Louisiana when I was in Basic Training with the Army back in about 1969 or 1970. We saw a lot of people we grew up with that we had not seen in many years. It is good to reminisce.

Prayer Changes Things

This morning I was working on my project and when it seemed like it was impossible to fix and I was totally stressed out about it, I bowed my head ask the Lord to help me. I told the Lord at this moment this seems impossible without your help. Within the hour I had it fixed and turned over to our client for testing. Later in the day the boss came by and said, "Why don't you just go home. You have put in a lot of extra hours and we'll call you if we need you". So with that I headed to Arkansas. I am not going to worry about it anymore until next week.

I Think This Project Is Going To Be The Death Of Me

It seems like everytime I fix something with the parser and start testing I find something else that is not right. Now I still have two problems to fix. I guess I will have to work all weekend.

My Project Is Broke Again

I thought Andy and I had fixed the parser problem yesterday but late this evening I found another problem with it. I know where I'll be spending my day tomorrow. If I had not tested so much I guess I would not know about this problem. Well, anyway it is better to find the problem now than wait until I intalled it into production and then find out I still had a problem.

Working With Netmeeting

Andy and I are working on a difficult problem at work. Andy had to stay home today. We spent the entire day working on this problem over Netmeeting. Andy did the typing and I watched his screen at home and talked to him over the phone. We finally whipped the problem about 4:00 p.m. It was a long hard day.

Problems At Work

Since my latest project at work has been going so badly I decided I better drive back to Kansas City this afternoon and be at the Sprint Campus in the morning.

Wedding Bells Are Ringing For Robby

We had a great get-together and wedding shower for Robby & Rachael with friends and family tonight at the church. We enjoyed a ton of great food and fellowship. In spite of all the great food I somehow was able to stick to my diet. There were several salads to choose from and a few vegetables that I could eat. I had fresh strawberries instead of the pecan pie. Now that was hard.

Early Morning Juice Session

I could not sleep so at 6:00 a.m. I got up and started washing carrots. I made about a gallon of carrot, cabbage, celery, and spinach juice. I did not have any beets or parsley so I just used what we had.

New Project Still Causing Trouble

This morning before 8:00 a.m. the Provisioning Centers around the country are already complaining about orders not being right. Not sure what's going on yet. Probably another ruined day because of this project.

New Project Ruined Vacation Day

My new project decided to raise it ugly head again this morning. We had a couple thousand orders miss being worked. I spent the entire afternoon and up into the night working to retrieve the failed orders. We think we found them all and sent them back through the system and they worked fine with the old parser. I think this project is doomed. I hope I have a job after this.

New Project Bit The Dirt

Well, the new project at work that appeared to be running fine was not. There were 3000-4000 orders that were not worked correctly yesterday. It did not show it's ugly head until this morning. Andy and I worked on it all day long. We finally found the culprit this afternoon in time for me to drive to Little Rock this evening.

Installed New Project At Work

This morning at 10:00 a.m. I installed a new project for our SODS application. I have been holding my breath all day. So far so good.

Lee was sick tonight and we did not have a video broadcast from church. I really missed it. I tuned into First Family Church tonight. It was great.

New WM Recorder

For a long time now I have been viewing either live or archived streaming videos from First Family Church or John Hagee Ministeries. Most of them I have been capturing the audio with Audacity and burning a CD of the audio. Over the months I kept wanting to record the streaming video feed so I would have the video and audio. I finally went searching this evening and found the answer. I love my new WM Recorder. It is very easy to use and makes a .wmv file that is easy to store and copy to a DVD or CD.

Theophilos Audio Bible Problem

I received my copy of Theophilos Audio Bible a couple weeks ago and I have been trying to install it to work with my already installed Theophilos Bible version 3.1.6. I always like to run the latest copy of software if I can. The version that came with Theophilos Audio Bible was version 2.6. I finally solved the problem this evening. It turned out to be very simple. Here are the steps:

1. Install the latest free version of Theophilos from Theophilos.com into the default folder. In my case that is "C:\Program Files\theo30".

2. Copy the Scourby folder from the Theophilos Audio Bible CD into the "C:\Program Files\theo30" folder. You should then have a "C:\Program Files\theo30\scourby" folder.

3. Copy these two files from the Theophilos Audio Bible CD into the "C:\Program Files\theo30" folder.
  • theocd.inf
  • verses1.nar

4. Start Theophilos and set "Data files path" in
Program-->Settings-->Paths to
"C:\Program Files\theo30".

5. Close Theophilos and Start it again. Presto you can now do "Verse Sound" or "Auto Play" and they work.

I would loved to have found these steps somewhere on the internet. Maybe they are out there but I could not find them.

I appreciate very much the help that Craig at Theophilos and Robert at Theophilos Audio Bible gave to me to help solve this problem.

Missing Home

I normally run one of the cameras and encode the video for the archive copy on our website. Since I didn't get to go home I get to watch it from the other end. My buddy did a great job running my camera from me. I enjoyed the service from Crystal Hill Baptist Church and the second service from First Family Church.

This afternoon I made my weeks supply of juice and made it up to V6 juice this time. I included carrots, kale, parsley, apples, celery, and beets.

I also used my new "Pump it & Seal it" to preserve my juice in 8oz jars. A little extra work but it is suppose to keep better and longer. We'll see how it goes.

V5 Juice

Today I mad it up to V5 juice. I included carrots, celery, kale, parsley, and beets in my juice today. It does not look as good as carrot juice but it tastes fine. I sure hope all this stuff is good for me.

This evening I decided to go over to First Family Church. They have an extra worship service on Saturday evening for folks that can not make it on Sunday. I realy enjoyed the service.

Grocery Shopping

Seemed like every time I turn around it's time to go grocery shopping again. I ended up at Wild Oats this evening. The Kale looked good and I found out it was good for my gout problem so I'll be adding that to my juice tomorrow.

New Green Star Juicer

Since it looks like I'll be working long hours and unable to go to Arkansas I ordered a juicer. I don't want to give up my diet because I can not go to Arkansas every weekend. One of our chores during the weekend has been to juice about 20-25 pounds of carrots, beets, and celery. That would give us both enough juice for an 8 ounce serving twice a day. Now Mary will have to make her own juice and I can continue my diet by juicing here in Kansas City. I really like our Green Star and Green Power juicers. They do a great job.

I ordered my new Green Star from Vitality Plus. I have ordered several things from them and they have been very good to work with. They also have a complete parts list online with pictures of each part.

Cooking Rice

I have been fixing rice to go with my huge salad for the past couple weeks. I think I have got it down pat finally. I can now fix rice and it come out perfect every time. I have looked at a lot of websites about cooking rice but this one has helped me the most. Cooking Rice. I like pictures.

I use Brown Basmati Rice. I put in a cup of water and add a little Celtic Sea Salt and a little granulated garlic, then add a half cup of rinsed rice and follow the pictures. I don't even time it anymore.

First Three Mile Walk In Two Weeks

Because of the gout I have not walked around the Sprint Campus for the past two weeks. Today it was so much better I decided to give it a try. I ended up making two loops around the campus which is three miles according to my GPS. I felt really good after the walk. Maybe a little pain in my hips. Just getting old I guess.

Core Hours 9 to 5

On my way to Kansas City I learned that I am going to have to be in the office for core hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. With lunch break that will mean I am back to a 8 to 5 job. That is really going to mess up my schedule for trips to Arkansas. Not sure what I am going to do about that. Upsetting to say the least.

Very Hard To Stay On A Diet & Eat Out

We went to a buffet for lunch today and I had a hard time finding thing on the buffet that would be on my diet. I had a big salad but it was ice burg lettuce. I found several vegetables and some rice.

Fish For Dinner

Mary and I went out to eat and I had a piece of fish. This was the first meat that I have had in a couple months. We really enjoyed it. Now it's back on the diet.

Preston Is The Pitcher

I got home to Arkansas in time to go see my grandson play baseball. He is only 10 years old and has turned out to be a great pitcher. He looks like a real pro out there on the mound.
